24 Feb 09 – EUROPEAN CHAMPIONSHIPS, Tambre, Italy – Steve Sellers debuts new National Team uniforms in guest appearance at this most important race on the ISMF World calendar.

NATIONAL TEAM SELECTION will begin shortly after the end of the 09 ski season. SKI MOUNTAINEERING COMPETITION CANADA has chosen a goal of getting a full national team to the ISMF World Championships in Andorra in March of 2010. Selection criteria will consider results in the 2009 rankings, and potentially early-2010 events, as well as less-tangible, but equally important factors such as availability, health, resources, and commitment. Exact details and application procedures will be forwarded to all Canadian athletes currently registered with the SMCC. Team selection will take place earlier than usual, to provide time for arranging funding, work leaves, and sponsorship.

The unfortunate withdrawal of the North American Championships from WHISTLER leaves a space on our calendar. The ski community there regrets the loss and promises to be back with a high-profile event next year. Last minute plans for an alternate race may or may not bear fruit – stay tuned.

Register for SMCC races via the form attached to the end of this announcement, via the www.skimocanada.org URL or through the Alpine Club of Canada website or office 403 678 3200. Information for each event can be found at the dedicated event websites linked from there.

Results for Mountain Storm – Mar 7, 2009

The third round of the Canadian Skimo Cup for 2009 season was hosted at the Fernie Alpine Resort.

Once again, during the Mountain Storm event a true snow storm hit the mountain which added to the overall challenge of the race.

Three days of snowing and the resort’s highest chairlift failure provided competitors with great powder skiing and many of them took tumbles and head-first falls.

The race was won by a Canadian fast man – Reiner Thoni – very closely followed by another fast charging competitors.

Women’s main race was won by Julie Matteau who moved this winter to Revelstoke to devote herself to full time ski bumming.
